Narrative psychology shows that the story you tell about your life determines how you feel about it. Rewriting your story is one of the most powerful tools for change.
Dan McAdams, a psychologist at Northwestern University, has spent 30 years studying something he calls "narrative identity" — the internalized, evolving story you tell about who you are, where you've come from, and where you're going. His research reveals a striking finding: the story you tell about your life matters more than what actually happened. Two people can experience identical events — a difficult childhood, a career setback, a relationship failure — and construct completely different narratives. One tells a "contamination story" (things were good, then they got bad, and they'll stay bad). The other tells a "redemption story" (things were bad, but I grew through them, and they made me stronger). The event is the same. The story is different.
